About Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park

Located in the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Álava within Spain's Basque Country, Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park spans over 19,000 hectares of mountainous terrain, stretching across the Aizkorri and Aratz massifs of the Basque Mountains. Characterized by steep limestone peaks such as Aitxuri (1,551 m) and Aizkorri (1,528 m), the park offers dramatic karst landscapes shaped by millennia of erosion. The park also includes dense beech and oak forests, limestone cliffs, and numerous caves, making it a refuge for diverse flora and fauna including the Cantabrian brown bear, wild boar, and rare orchid species. The area has a rich cultural heritage, featuring ancient hermitages and mountain shepherding traditions. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the park's extensive network of well-marked trails, including part of the famed GR-121 and the Basque Trail, which traverse scenic ridges and alpine meadows. Rock climbing, birdwatching, and caving are popular activities, alongside mountain biking on designated routes. The natural park’s remote highlands provide tranquil settings and panoramic views of the surrounding Basque countryside. Visitor centers and mountain huts offer educational resources and shelter for multi-day excursions. Aizkorri-Aratz's blend of ecological significance, outdoor recreation, and cultural legacy makes it a top destination for nature lovers and hikers exploring northern Spain.
